Sinuses are structures that are located around the eyes and the nose. There are 4 different types of sinuses, the sinuses that are located above the eyes are the frontal sinus. There are two sinuses located below the eyes, called as the maxillary sinuses, which is in the cheek bone and there are two sinuses in between the eyes called as the ethmoid sinus and there are two sinuses approximate in the center of the skull behind the orbit, that is called sphenoid sinuses. When somebody gets a sinus infection, an acute sinusitis, a common cold, which has infected the sinuses, then people tend to get up in the morning with a headache, heaviness in the head, they will feel their whole head is very heavy, groggy, their nose is congested, their nose is blocked. All signs of cold will be there along with a headache. This is what is a sinus headache. If predominantly if the headache is in the frontal region, then it is a frontal sinus headache. If it is predominantly on the cheek, then it is predominantly maxillary sinus headache. If patient experience pain on the back of the head or the top of the head, then it is largely a sphenoid sinus headache and if it is at the root of the nose, then it would be ethmoid sinusitis. It will also make us aware of which sinus to look for and what to look for. If somebody comes to us with a maxillary sinus pain on one side, then it would be more keen on looking at dentogenic sinusitis, that is more of dental reason for the sinus to have go infected. If somebody happens to come with a headache in the forehead, if it is a childless than 12 years, then I will not be very bothered as this sinus fully forms only after 12 years of age. So it is very unlikely that a child will come with a frontal sinusitis. But if somebody comes with a congestion, nose block and root of the nose pain then we are dealing with sinusitis of that region and that helps to make a diagnosis and give appropriate treatment.
