Classification of herpes zoster (shingles) pain

Acute herpetic neuralgia:
Persists less than 30 days from rash onset
Treatment: NSAIDs, analgesics

Subacute herpetic neuralgia:
Persists over 30 days but resolves within 4 months of rash onset
Treatment: NSAIDs, analgesics

Postherpetic neuralgia:
Persists over 4 months from rash onset
Treatment: Tricyclic antidepressants, gabapentin, pregabalin
