Hi, I'm disability lawyer David Brannen. In this video, I'm gonna talk to you about the differences between EI sickness benefits and CPP disability benefits. After watching this video, you'll understand the difference between the two, how they work together and whether you might qualify for both payments. Let's take a look at these programs head to head. The first thing to note is that they're both administered by Service Canada. That doesn't mean a whole lot, other than that they'll probably be able to coordinate the two programs if you end up applying for both types of benefits. Now, the second thing to look at is, how long are these benefits or what type of benefit are they. EI sickness is a type of short term disability benefit intended to be paid for a short period of time, whereas CPP disability is intended to be a long term disability benefit that's paid over a long period of time. The third thing is how long do you have to wait to qualify to get the benefit? The waiting period for EI sickness is just one week. So after you've been off sick for one week, you can qualify for the payments to start. That's part of it being a short term disability type of program. On the other hand, the waiting period for CPP disability is four months. You have to be continuously sick and off work and disabled for four months before you can even qualify to apply for CPP disability. The next thing is how long are the benefits actually paid? With EI sickness, benefits are paid for a maximum of 15 weeks. CPP disability is known as a long term disability benefit. It's paid up to age 65 from whenever it starts. So it can start as young as 18 and go to age 65. So the amount of years will just depend on however old you are and taking you through to your sixty fifth birthday. The last part is how much can you get paid? EI sickness is paid by the week. The maximum EI sickness payment is right around five hundred and seventy dollars a week. It can be less depending on your contributions. On the other hand, CPP disability is paid monthly and the maximum payment amount is just under fourteen hundred dollars a month, although it can be less down to as little as around six hundred dollars a month, depending on how much you've contributed. So there you go. That's how these two programs work together. As you can see, EI sickness is meant to cover you for the period immediately after your disability starts up until the point that you qualify to start getting CPP disability payments. So they work kind of hand in hand, whereas EI sickness will kind of work is the short term disability coverage and then CPP disability will step in as the long term disability coverage. So now you understand the difference between CPP disability and EI sickness. And that you can apply for both programs and they can cover you continuously for your period of disability.
