ELSE B. IN THE SEA
THE WOMAN WHO PAINTED THE WONDERS OF THE DEEP
by Jeanne Walker Harvey, illustrated by Melodie Stacey

ABOUT THE BOOK
Else B. in the Sea is a poetic picture book biography about a daring and pioneering woman artist that combines themes of art and science from author Jeanne Walker Harvey and illustrator Melodie Stacey.

Else Bostelmann donned a red swimsuit and a copper diving helmet and, with paints and brushes in hand, descended into the choppy turquoise sea off the coast of Bermuda. It was 1930, and few had ventured deep into the sea before. She discovered a fairyland six fathoms below the surface—fantastic coral castles, glittering sunbeams, swaying sea plumes, and slender purple sea fans. And fish! Flashy silverfish, puckering blue parrotfish, iridescent jellyfish.

Else painted under the sea! She painted what she saw with her own eyes, and, back on land, she painted the never-before-seen deep-sea creatures described by world-renowned scientist William Beebe on his momentous 1930s bathysphere expeditions for the New York Zoological Society’s Department of Tropical Research. It was a daring and glamorous adventure and a dream come true for Else B., who shared this new, unfathomable world with humankind.

ABOUT Jeanne Walker Harvey
Ever since she was a child, Jeanne dreamed of being a children’s book author. She was quite the bookworm as a girl. She loved curling up with her family’s collie and reading, reading, reading. Every week her mom took her to the local library, and Jeanne returned home with a tower of books.
When not writing, Jeanne can be found enjoying time with family and friends, dancing in Zumba class, walking along the Bay looking for sea lions, hiking, visiting modern art museums, exploring new places and eating chocolate in all forms.

ABOUT Melodie Stacey
From FLOW Magazine:
Melodie Stacey is a fine art and mixed media artist based in Brighton, UK. She recently created an illustration for one of the bookmarks that came as a paper extra in our Dutch special, Flow Books & Reading. Here, Melodie tells us more about her work and her love for books.

“When creating the bookmark illustration, I drew inspiration from renaissance portraits,” says Melodie. “I find the detail that they went into when painting clothing in those days fascinating. I wanted to create a piece were the garment was as important as the face. I painted flowers and leaves that gradually change color along the dress, as if they are cascading down. I kept the background as dark as possible to make the dress stand out even more. The woman is fictional, but I imagine her as a strong independent person with a good dress sense! I used gouache to paint it, which is a fairly new medium to me, but it’s become my favorite way to paint.”
