Our plans don't run smoothly as our Italian Motorhome Adventure continues to Herculaneum and Naples.

This showcases a morning visit to the fascinating historical site of Herculenium on the next leg of our Italian Motorhome Adventure. The site was amazing, well worth a visit and the entrance fee was only 12 Euros!

Here we witnessed the power of Mount Vesuvius and how it engulfed the whole town of 5,000 people. The eruption caused so much devastation but ironically it also preserved the town, even some of the wooden beams and roovfs survived. This site is better preserved than Pompeii and helps historians to see how Herculanians lived in 79 AD.

They found a number of skeletons, 300 were discovered near to where the beach would have been. These people would have been hoping to be saved by the sea only to be killed by the heat from the eruption.

The site has roads that are quite a lot lower than the pavements and the houses are in a remarkable condition considering they were buried under 20 meters of volcanic ash and pumice which was excavated over a millennia later.

Herculaneum housed the more well to do Romans than the more famous Pompei. These were mainly second homes of the elite of Rome. Herculeanium housed the holiday homes of the great and the good and they decorated these homes with mosaics, frescos and marble. There are examples of some houses that had almost complete patterned mosaics.

There is plenty to see and we visited for over two hours using an audio guide (10 Euros). We made our way to the baths meandering through the cobbled/paved streets only to find they were shut due to restoration.

We found a small but really well designed eating place called Umami, close to the Herculaneum site. We had one of the most delicious platters and were served by a lovely young man called Flávio. This was accompanied by a plate of bruschetta and a glass of wine, followed by the best coffee we had in Italy and delicious pancakes with Nutella and cream. It was top class and we both said we would go there again in a heartbeat.

After lunch we  headed off to Napoli for the afternoon to see the old town. We found the main station and then took the train to Napoli Garibaldi. Arriving at the centre we were greeted by the heaviest rain we had seen on our Italian travels. We took refuge in an art gallery and spent a couple of hours looking at the Caravaggio, and all the other paintings they had.

Once the rain had subsided we headed through the narrow windy streets to find the storic centro, the historic centre. It is unesco listed. We weren’t honestly sure whether we found it or not.

We tried to get pizza from a place we had seen Clive Myrie visit that is renowned for the best pizza in Italy but we were both running low on battery on our phones and worried we wouldn’t find our way back to the train station. We arrived at Garibaldi to see our train literally close the doors and leave the station. We then had a ½ hour wait for the next train which headed towards Sorento. We noticed it was sailing past stations that it had stopped at on the way in. We had a dawning realisation that we were on an express train to Sorrento and it sailed past our stop at a rate of knots. It eventually stopped at Torre Annunziata and we hopped off and got a train heading back to Napoli. We were very glad to get back to our motorhome.
