Westward Expansion & Manifest Destiny - LOA 2020

The expansion of the United States into the territory west of the Mississippi River began with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. It took American colonists a century and a half to expand as far west as the Appalachian Mountains, a few hundred miles from the Atlantic coast. It took another fifty years to push the frontier to the Mississippi River. In the 1830s and 1840s, Manifest Destiny, the idea that the United States was destined to expand across the entire continent, was used to promote further territorial expansion.
