Halfway between the North Pole and the Equator, the Vercors rises its imposing cliffs above the valleys of the Drac, the Drôme and the Isère. The high plateaus of the Vercors, a land of solitude with a fragile balance (the roof of the Vercors with the Grand Veymont which culminates at 2 341 meters of altitude and the Mont Aiguille, one of the seven wonders of the Dauphiné) cover more than 17 000 hectares. Without road or permanent settlement, they are one of the jewels of the Vercors Regional Natural Park, combined with the Vercors gorges. Because of their geographical position, hinge between the southern and northern Prealps, the high plateaus are subject to the triple influence of the Mediterranean, the ocean and the continent. This triad brings to the country a varied vegetation. These high limestone plateaus with a rigorous climate and varied vegetation are also home to a great wealth of fauna. The animal life is however discreet, but most of the mountain species such as the chamois, the golden eagle and reintroduced species such as the marmot, the Alpine ibex or the griffon vulture can be found in these places.
