Today, I continue with the direct drive conversion on my Creality Ender 3 Pro 3d Printer. In the last video, we mounted and installed the: Th3d Tough Hot End (E3D V6 clone), Bondtech BMG Extruder, Th3d EzABL Sensor, and the Printermods.com v1.3 MDD Plate. The next step in the instructions calls for routing the wiring loom in front of the gantry, instead of behind it. I decided to take this opportunity to clean up my harness, and add some modularity to it by creating a DIY wiring harness.
I did this by using a 10 Pin Micro-fit Molex connector (links below) on the hot end side, and JST-XH connectors on the Th3d EzBoard v1.2 side. The 10 pin Molex connector will give me the ability to have a circuit for the heater cartridge, thermistor, 40mm hot end fan, and the ability to run one or two layer fans (5015 or 4010). Optionally, an 8 pin connector can be used if you know that you will only want to use one layer fan.
To create a custom wiring harness for your 3d printer, simply measure and cut the required amount of wire to reach from your board to the hot end when at max distance. Make sure to add a little bit of extra for slack and error. Strip the ends, and crimp your pins on. Insert the pins into the connectors and do a light "tug" test to make sure they are seated. I used some wire sheathing sourced from amazon to protect the wires, and make it look better (link provided below).
Once your hot end side is complete, flip the printer over to access the main board. The thermistor and layer fan wires will need a JST-XH connector placed on them. The heater cartridge and hot end fan get secured into place via the boards screw terminals. Plug everything in and test the printer. Once done, you are ready to alter the firmware and slicer settings. That video will be shown in part 3, and will be uploaded soon!
