In Ladakh, a region in the northern part of India, people from the Leh and Kargil areas have been protesting together despite the cold weather.
They want their region, which became a Union Territory without its own government in 2019, to have more control and protection for their land, jobs, culture, and environment.
This change happened when the Indian government decided to remove Article 370 and 35A, which also split the larger region of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.
The groups leading these protests, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), are asking for several things:
They want Ladakh to become its own state within India, to have special status under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, to have two seats instead of one in India's Parliament, and to ensure that local people get priority for jobs.
