Significance Of Shareholding Pattern: Definition: The shareholding pattern represents the share ownership pattern of a company. It details the manner in which different investors have invested in the company’s shares. It also gives the percentage of shareholding by the different classes of investors. Every listed company is required to publish a statement of its shareholding pattern every quarter. Types of Shareholder: Promoter shareholding (Govt, Corporate, Domestic and Foreign Individuals, Foreign corporates ) Public shareholding (MFs, FII, FDI, Venture, General Public(individual, DII, retail), Bank like Institutional) Significance Of Promoter Shareholding: First of all, according to SEBI rules, maximum promoter shareholding can only be 75%. Now, When you are reading the shareholding pattern of a company, always compare the pattern of that quarter with those of the previous quarters to check how holdings have changed. Commonly, high stake in the shares of the promoters is a positive sign. However, in case of the shareholdings of the promoters changes (increases or decreases), the investors should pay attention to the purpose (pay-off debt, new acquisition, new shares issued, offloading). Some of these reasons are positive signs for investors like you and while some reasons are negative. To summarize, Promoters' shareholding movements, are followed to predict the future outcome of the company, as investors don't always have access to information that promoters have. Significance of Public Shareholding: If there's a gradual increase in Individual investors, this exposes the stock and company more and more to market conditions and emotions that drives investors day to day. And if individual investing is increasing while institutional and promoters are decreasing, mostly signifies that they are in possession of information that is not favorable. A moderate to high stake of FIIs resembles optimism especially regarding future growth, as FIIs are the darlings of any company, and are considered more intelligent at making investing money.
