Loosen Corroded Stuck Water Valve

The shut off valve in this video was stuck in the open position for 20 years.  Learn how to get a corroded valve that will not turn to open.

With a little patience, a stop valve that is stuck and won't turn can be fixed.  Corrosion from minerals left behind after water evaporates can build up on the valve stem and prevent the valve from turning.  If the valve is not regularly turned, the threads on the valve stem can rust and cause the valve to seize up.

Many people will cut the valve out and replace it will a ball valve.  If you can't solder copper pipe or if the valve is in a location that would make it difficult to replace, removing the valve stem from the valve body it may be a good idea to repair the valve.
