Brandon Hewitt here with BRandom Fishing and I have a good one for you today! I don't like the way I always get my butt wet when fishing on my kayak. I look at some of the other kayaks out there and they have really nice raised seats. I wanted one of these on my kayak but could not find anything online that was for my kayak. I decided to build my own.
I bought a stadium seat from walmart for $15. It was in the camping section and is for watching sports on metal uncomfortable bleachers. It looked like it was going to be perfect. When I got it home it was a little too wide to fit in the spot that the old seat was in. I went online and bought a contour gauge for about $10. I needed something to easily duplicate the contour of the side of the kayak.
The opening of the kayak seat was 20” wide. I used the gauge to measure the side of the kayak and marked it out on a piece of 2 by 6 lumber. I used a jigsaw to cut it out and then used a wood drill bit to make two holes the same size as the pipe on the seat. I used a table saw to rip it so it was not as wide. I just eyeballed it. I then used screws to clamp the wood onto the seat. I used two pieces of rope to lash it to the kayak and I took it to the water.
It was a little more tipsy than the old seat but this is because of the higher center of gravity because it was higher out of the water. The paddling angle was a little different to but I easily got used to it.
