2015 Infiniti QX80
The infiniti QX80 looks a bit like a blue whale. However like the sea animal you have to respect it because of its size. At 5800 lbs its mass is more akin to an abrams tank than a passenger vehicle. Thankfully this luxury landyatch is equipped with a massive 5.6L V8 which produces 400hp and 413 lb ft of torque. 0-60 happens in an impressive 6.5 seconds. That is actually very respectable for a car of this size. As you can imagine this doesn’t effect the fuel economy positively. It achieves 14 mpg in the city and 20mpg on the highway in both standard and AWD trims.
The interior is incredibly spacious. Second row passengers get 41 inches of legroom and third row occupants recieve almost 29 inches. While its not super comfortable back here this might be the largest third row compartment ive ever sat in. This car features a rear seat entertainment system that promises to entertain its passengers. Very unique is the QX80’s advanced climate control system. Featuring a plasmacluster air purifier, the vehicle produces positive and negative ions which prevent odors from sticking to the interior materials and help eliminate mold and viruses in the air. The grape polyphenol filter even removes 99.5% of allergens from air entering from the outside. This is really cool stuff.
The interior feels high quality, the leather is very nice and the fit and finish is top notch. The dash layout doesnt feel as high tech and modern as some of its competitors but it is simple, easy to use, and nice looking. The 15 speaker bose cabin sourround system is great and the tri zone entertainment system allows rear passengers to watch different movies and tv shows on their own 7 inch screen.
When the 2nd and 3rd row seats are folded down in the QX80 you get an enormous 95.1 cubic feet of cargo space. It feels like you could stick a queen sized bed in here. Who needs a motor home? With the seats up it has the ability to seat a claimed 8 adults comfortably. It certainly can fit 5 adults and 3 kids no problem.
With such a massive chassis parking would normally be a hassle, but Infiniti has equipped the QX80 with the 360* object detection system as well as a simulated 360* aerial view of the car. Both in conjunction actually make parking this goliath possible.
The QX80 features intelligent cruise control which is able to track the speed of the car in front of you. This technology is even able to break the car to a complete stop and then re accelerate the vehicle to keep up with the leading traffic.
Finally both our mechanical engineering backgrounds come in handy. The QX80 features Ultra high strength tensile steel with a yield strength of 1.4 giga pascals. Take our word for it this is a lot and makes the car both safer in a crash and in infinities words “lighter.” Of course the vehicle comes with infinities plethora of safety technologies. Lane departure prevention, intelligent brake assistance, rear collision avoidance and blind spot intervention to name a few. Infiniti makes it very clear that safety is of the utmost priority and in a vehicle as massive as this, unless you run into the 6 wheeled mercedes G wagon you are going to win the fight.
Looks are entirely subjective. While I personally don’t like the way it looks that is truly the only downside of this car, well and the gas mileage. But thats par for the course. With a large V8, a towing capacity of 8500 lbs, enough space to fit a smart car in the back and an extremely comfortable ride, the QX80 will satiate anyones hunger for a massive road tripper.
