On January 3rd and 6th 1980, 350 million voters in India - the world's largest democracy - will be entitled to vote in a crucial election that may well bring the return to power of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the former Indian premier. Mrs.  Gandhi lost power in elections nearly three years ago in what was in effect a vote of no-confidence in the emergency rule she had declared in 1975. This report traces her career from then until now as well as giving a brief background to the period of rule by the Janata alliance that replaced her. Also featured are former premier Morarji Desai, current Janata leader Jagjivan Ram, and current caretaker premier Charan Singh.  Election issues covered include the economy, the Harijans (Untouchables) and the plight of the rural poor.
