What is a fly plaid?  When is it worn?  In this video, USA Kilts explains what a fly plaid is, how it's worn and when you should wear it.

Transcript:

A fly plaid is a 40 to 50 inch square of tartan fabric that matches your kilt.  It is fringed around the edges and has a box pleat sewn in one corner.  It is worn through the epaulet of the jacket and pulled down to the bottom of the pectoral muscle in front and hangs down to mid calf in the back.  It is only worn when you are dressed formally, you do not have to wear it to dress formally.  If you do choose to wear a fly plaid, it will only be worn for formal circumstances.
