Washington – 11 July 2024
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Alexander Stubb, President of Finland:
“I've had the opportunity to speak to President Biden on many occasions during the past 48 hours. And as I always say, we human beings, when we're treated in the public eye, we're never as good as we sometimes look and we're never as bad. I have absolutely no concerns about the capacity of the current president of the United States to lead his country and to lead our fight for Ukraine and to lead NATO. And I think this summit speaks tons and volumes for that. And to add on, for me, of course, it was a great experience last night to spend some time in the White House for the first time. And we had a really, really pleasant evening.”

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Alexander Stubb, President of Finland:
“As an avid pro-American who studied here for many years and lived here for many years, the only thing I'm worried about is that the political climate in the United States right now is too toxic. It is very polarized, and that sort of doesn't leave, I think, enough room for a civilized and constructive debate about different types of policy choices.”

STORYLINE:
Finnish president Alexander Stubb says he has no concerns over President Joe Biden’s ability to serve a second term.

“I have absolutely no concerns about the capacity of the current president of the United States to lead his country and to lead our fight for Ukraine and to lead NATO. And I think this summit speaks tons and volumes for that,” said Stubb ahead of the third and last day of the NATO summit in Washington.

Stubb was asked Thursday about his meetings with Biden and if he had any concerns over another Trump presidency with regards to Ukraine and NATO.

“As an avid pro-American who studied here for many years and lived here for many years, the only thing I'm worried about is that the political climate in the United States right now is too toxic,” he said.  “It is very polarized, and that sort of doesn't leave, I think, enough room for a civilized and constructive debate about different types of policy choices.”

On Thursday, the U.S., Canada, and Finland announced that they will work together to build up their icebreaker fleets as they look to bolster their defenses in the Arctic, where Russia is increasingly active.

The pact calls for enhanced information sharing on polar icebreaker production, allowing for workers and experts from each country to train in shipyards across all three. It also includes promoting to allies the purchase of polar icebreakers from American, Finnish, or Canadian shipyards for their own needs.

White House deputy national security adviser Daleep Singh said it will reinforce to adversaries Russia and China that the U.S. and its allies will “doggedly pursue collaboration on industrial policy to increase our competitive edge.”

NATO leaders met this week for a summit commemorating the 75th anniversary of the military alliance, which has never been larger and more focused, but which also faces potentially existential threats from outside and within.

The prospect of Trump returning to the White House has alarmed many in Europe who fear he may reduce U.S. commitments to NATO or Ukraine — or pull them completely.
