"They lay around like animals
"They lay around like animals (...) in houses, in corners, in roads by carriages." The daily life of domestic servants in the 19th palace was not a bed of roses.
Lack of qualifications and, most often, young age meant that servants employed in 19th-century in European cities were exposed to many dangers. A careless search for the first job could result in getting into a house of prostitution. Employment as a servant was far from romantic visions of an independent housewife. The work was exhausting and too hard. In case of a disciplinary loss of employment, the infamous history of employment was recorded in the servant's book. This effectively made it difficult to start a new job. You could be thrown away because of the smallest mistakes.
While it was easy to find a job as a maid, it was much harder to survive with dignity.
