Florida threw a shoe and the universe punished them, but what does the rulebook actually call for?

A very wonderful viewer asked why some referees hate it when players throw a shoe, and others are very cool with it. The easy answer is just that life isn't fair. The real answer is that college football likes to play it fast and loose, allowing referees to just use their "judgment" and "discretion" and that never EVER backfires for them.

When Florida's Marco Wilson threw an opponent's shoe during their 2020 showdown with LSU, he was celebrating a great play. Surely he didn't foresee it directly leading to his team losing the game, especially had he seen the 2019 Tennessee vs. BYU game when a similar act went unpenalized. Sorry, Marco.
