The TerraMaster F4-421 is a very interesting budget NAS option, as it comes with a fast X86 Celeron J3455 Quad Core CPU and 4GB of RAM. It also permits memory upgrading and for now it doesn't require proprietary RAM or "selected" drives such as other more "known" brands such as Synology, which besides that, they also sell very old and slow hardware for a much higher cost. As we often forget that RAID comes from Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives, HDD producers nowadays have also adopted a snake oil money making scheme as they just change a few things in a firmware and sell drives as "dedicated" for a lot more money.
Still regardless of all this nonsense with proprietary ram, expensive old hardware and dedicated drives, the TerraMaster F4-421 comes as a surprise, boasting fast & cheap hardware, running with almost anything that fits and having a major improvement in overall usage with the new TOS 5.1 system and TRAID option. Still keep in mind that this is a budget unit as it misses NVMe slots and if you want to add a SSD for acceleration, you will have to sacrifice one of the 4 available drive bays.
