Welcome to the first episode of our new Expats series in which we will explore how foreigners live in Ukraine. We start with Odessa and its 3 vibrant and newly acquired locals, who left their homes and moved to the sunny city by the Black Sea.  What made them make such a move and why did they decide to stay? Well, let's find out in this big episode, filmed in the beautiful Odessa.

MEET YOUR HEROES

🇹🇷 Tufan Chigdem moved to Odessa 14 years ago from Turkey in hopes to get a university degree. Needless to say, but as it usually happens, his student life was very vibrant, as he managed to combine studies with partying and work. He first worked at the book market, then launched a public transport business, but there was one thing that always stayed integral to his life and that was music. Tufan got into a renowned TV show called The Voice, reached semi finals and decided to devote his life to singing. Today, he will talk to us about life in Odessa and what has served as a primary cultural shock when he first arrived in the city.

🇮🇳Ashu Ravat was born in India, the city called Agra, home to Taj Mahal. His parents expected him to conquer his own country, but Ashu decided to move to Odessa, Ukraine instead. 10 years ago he enrolled into Odessa's medicine university and dived deep into the culture he never experienced before. With Ashu, we will explore the problems he faced when arriving in the city, why did he decide to stay after graduating and how did it so happen that he now helps other Indians to move to Ukraine for studies? Make sure you stay along for his truly inspiring story!

🇨🇩 JP Mukuna moved to Odessa from Congo, which is in central Africa, 26 years ago! Although he originally planned to return home after graduation, he got married instead and then decided to stick around. Throughout his life in Odessa, he worked for a large corporation, tried himself at entrepreneurship and then became the best bartender in the city. He loves his job and that it agives him an opportunity to converse with a diverse crowd. Apart from that, JP sings in a band called Odessa Unites Nationalities!
