A new twist on ankle
A new twist on ankle surgery is helping people with damaged tissue or a severe sprain get back on their feet in record time.
“The historic procedures involved an open incision with a lot of suturing. There’s a newer procedure to do it minimally invasive. And we combine it with a ankle arthroscopy which means a little camera into the ankle with instrumentation to be able to repair the ligament through two small punched incisions,” says Dr. Andrew Belis, who is a foot and ankle surgeon on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System.
These same techniques have been perfected over the years in hips and knees. The ankle presented a unique perspective.
“It’s a very tiny joint. So it makes it more challenging, recently there’s more and more equipment that’s out there to help,” says Dr. Belis.
The smaller procedure means less damage to the body. Operating through small punctures results in less blood loss and quicker healing. Studies find it delivers the same outcomes as a traditional open surgery.
“And each patient we’re finding we’re able to push the envelope and get them back to activity a little bit quicker. So it makes it a very exciting time to have this new procedure at our fingertips to be able to help these patients with chronic ankle weakness or chronic ankle instability,” says Dr. Belis.
Many times people with damaged ligaments or a badly sprained ankle will try to side-step surgery. But the resulting instability can make it worse. The arthroscopic approach can be done on recent or old injuries. Still providing a quick bounce back.
