Discourse analysis and narrative analysis are forms of qualitative research that focus on human communication. Discourse pertains to any form of communication, while narrative typically refers to descriptions of events or stories. The use of these methods differ from grounded theory and multiple case studies, for which we have procedural templates for conducting research. Instead of analyzing texts to understand reality or perceptions of it, discourse analysis delves into the communication itself, examining how texts shape meanings, perceptions, and actions. Two notable "minority approaches" for qualitative studies of strategy are "strategy as practices" and "strategy as discourse." The former examines what people do when strategizing, viewing strategy as an action rather than a static concept. The latter interprets strategy as a means of communication. Another variant, critical discourse analysis, seeks to identify and address problems within current discourses, aiming to provoke societal change. It's essential to understand the broader social context and changing meanings of words over time when employing discourse analysis. The method often intersects with grounded theory coding, emphasizing not the content but the act and purpose of communication. Link to the slides: osf.io/u9hs5
