The life of MARY TUDOR
The life of MARY TUDOR QUEEN OF FRANCE, youngest surviving and favourite sister of Henry VIII, came to an end in June 1533 when she was just 37 years old. At the time, her husband was Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, but he was her second spouse. She had previously been married (albeit very briefly) to King Louis XII of France and so she had to be given the funeral of a queen. As with so many of her family members though, the death of Mary Tudor and her interment were not the end of the story. In this Tudors documentary from History Calling I’ll look at what happened when royalty died in 16th century England and specifically at how the body of Mary Tudor Queen of France was treated after her passing and in the centuries since. This will include a detailed discussion of how her family went about burying a Queen. Originally laid to rest in the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds, Mary has been disturbed at least four times, including once at the behest of her brother when his dissolution of the monasteries meant that the Abbey where she lay was being destroyed. She now lies in St Mary's Church in Bury St Edmunds. Though the first disinterments were respectful and even accidental in one case, the act of digging up a queen was not always treated with reverence and in 1784 her coffin was opened and pieces of her long blond hair were cut off. They have since been sold at auctions and passed through families. Some can still be seen in British museums today. This video will discuss how her remains were treated, discuss the disinterments and compare her hair to descriptions of her written by those who saw her in life.
