Laying Out Your In-Ground Fence
"Flexible" is the word we'd use to describe In-Ground Electronic Fencing Systems. They can stop your dog from running away, keep him in the yard, but also steer Fido clear of sensitive areas, like your vegetable garden, or the kid's play area. Planning ahead is the key to success with your fencing system, and the first step is to decide on the layout.

This video is to help you choose a layout that is right for you, and what types of options you have for protecting your yard, and keeping Fido where he should be!

Choose A Layout
An in-ground fence can do far more than just enclose and area. It can be used as a straight barrier on its own or to supplement a fence. It can enclose the front yard, back yard, or both. You can add "keep-away zones" inside your enclosure, or you can use the in-ground fencing system just to keep you dog away from certain areas inside your yard.

The purpose of this page is to help you choose a layout. How to wire the actual layouts is covered in other videos.

Example: Your House And Yard ...
The example shown is a house located on a rectangular lot, bounded by green, and your dog: Ollie. Like any responsible dog owner, you want to keep your dog where he/she belongs, which is on you own property.

In-Ground Fence Enclosure: Front Yard Only
You can use the system to enclose the front yard only. When Ollie is wearing his collar and you let him out the front, he will be safely contained within the fence area. If you let him out the back, he can go where he wants. Just be aware that if he is wearing his Electronic Fence collar when you let him out the back, he won't be able to go into the front yard. The In-Ground Fencing System transmits to the collar regardless of whether your dog is on the inside, or outside of the enclosure.

In-Ground Fence Enclosure: Back Yard Only
Like the last one, only the signal wire runs around the back yard instead of the front.

In-Ground Fence Enclosure: Front and Back Yard
This is the most common application. The E-Fence wire loops around the entire yard.

In-Ground Fence Barrier
We said that electronic fencing systems are pretty flexible, and here's an example. You don't have to make an enclosure, you can use the fence as a barrier only. In our case, the barrier runs along the front yard next to the street. The wire is shown as a straight line, but the wiring is a little more complicated and we'll go over that in another video.
"Why can't the dog just run into the neighbor's yard around the barrier?" I hear you say. Well ... he/she can! So, as this stands right now, it doesn't make sense as a barrier, unless you use the ...

In-Ground Fence Barrier With A Physical Fence
That's more like it! Some areas have zoning, or deed restrictions, limiting fences across the front of the property. This way you can run the physical fence around the yard and use the e-fence to keep your dog from running through the front.

In-Ground Fence Enclosure With Zone
In this case, the fence runs all around the yard, but there is an additional section that we're calling a "keep away zone" because the signal wire runs round an area that you want your dog to keep out of. We told you these things are flexible, so not only can you use the E-Fence to keep your dog in a particular place, you can use it to keep your dog away from a place. The example shows a kid's play area with swings.

In-Ground Fence Deterrent Zones Only
You don't need to use the In-Ground Fence as a fence! Yep, you can use it just to keep your dog away from particular areas. The example shown is a kid's play area and also a vegetable garden.

Summary
So - those are your options for laying out your In-Ground (Underground) Fencing System. You can:
* Enclose the front yard only
* Enclose the back yard only
* Enclose the entire yard
* Enclose a portion of front, back, or whole yard
* Use it as an electronic barrier
* Combine the barrier with a physical fence
* Add one, or more, deterrent zones
* Use the system purely as a deterrent
