Harvesting 18650 cells from used
Harvesting 18650 cells from used Lenovo 55+ laptop battery packs.
I picked up a batch of 20 damaged battery packs, mostly with broken latches and connectors. Inside is a 3S2P cell configuration. These packs ranged in dates from 2010 up to 2012 and mostly had good cells in them.
The earlier packs had a simpler construction, the 3 pair of cells tabbed together in series and a wire off each end plus the two center sensing connections. The later model packs had the last pair of cells flipped around and then had more tabbing running back to the BMS board. These took more care to separate as there were live conductors very close together. Unfortunately I didn't shoot any video of those later packs.
I would first either desolder or cut any wires between the cells and the BMS. Then I would cut any remaining tabbing between the cells and BMS to free up the cells. Finally I would cut any tabbing joining pairs of cells together and clean up the ends to fit into my battery holders.
Then for testing, measure the voltage, charge to 4.1v, rest for ~2 weeks, measure voltage (and later internal resistance). Then I performed a discharge capacity test and finally charged back to 4.1v until ready to build the packs for testing:
