This is basically true if we are talking about the global workforce.

In the USA, approximately 1500 people per year die if unemployment goes up 1%, while globally it is around 30,000 per year for each 1% increase in unemployment.

Calculations are below.

For the USA:

Labour force in US: 160 million Labor force, total
1% increase in unemployment: 1.6 million people
Chance of death for average age working person (~40 years old) = 1/663 per year. Risk of death by age and sex
Increase in risk of death because of unemployment: 63%. Losing Life and Livelihood: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Unemployment and All-Cause Mortality
((1.63/1)-(1)) * (1/663) * 1.6 million = 1520 excess deaths.
For the global population:

Global labour force: 3.3 billion The World Factbook
0.63*(1/663)*3.3 billion*0.01 = 31,357 excess deaths
