The origins of the name Sabah are uncertain, and several theories have emerged. One theory suggests that during its time as part of the Sultanate of Brunei, it was referred to as Saba due to the presence of various types of bananas called "pisang saba" (also known as cooking bananas), which were extensively cultivated along the region's coast and popular in Brunei. The Bajau community referred to it as "pisang jaba." Due to local dialect, the word Saba was pronounced as Sabah by the local population. During Brunei's submission to Majapahit, the poem in Old Javanese Nagarakretagama described the area that is now Sabah as Seludang.

Meanwhile, although the Chinese have been associated with the island of Borneo since the Han Dynasty, they did not have specific names for the region. Instead, during the Song Dynasty, they referred to the entire island as Po Ni (also pronounced as Bo Ni), which was the same name they used to refer to the Sultanate of Brunei at that time. Due to Sabah's proximity to Brunei, it has been suggested that Sabah is a Brunei Malay word meaning "upstream" or "northward." Another theory suggests that it originated from the Malay word "sabak," meaning a place where coconut sugar is produced. Sabah (صباح) is also an Arabic word meaning "morning."

The existence of multiple theories makes it difficult to determine the true origin of the name. It is nicknamed the "Land Below the Wind" because the state is located below the typhoon belt of East Asia and is rarely affected by typhoons, except for occasional tropical storms.
