This video introduces you to Itsuki Fujima, the 8th "Somegoro Matsumoto," a Kabuki actor. Itsuki was born in Tokyo to a Japanese mother and a Japanese father who is a famous Kabuki actor. His grandfather inherited the stage name, "Somegoro Matsumoto VI," and his father, "Somegoro Matsumoto VII." There are several families in Japan that continue Japan's ancient theater called, "Ka.bu.ki."
Kabuki is one of Japan's classical theater forms, and the sons born into the Kabuki actors' families continue the tradition; these people are considered national treasures of Japan. The word, "Kabuki," delivers from "ka.bu.ku" which means "to be unique" or "to be out of the ordinary." The word can also be interpreted as "avant-garde"; the expression "ka.bu.ki.mo.no" referred originally to those who were bizarrely dressed. It is often translated into English as "strange things" or "the out-of-box things," and referred to the style of dress worn by the gang of samurai in the Edo period.
Kabuki became a theater form in 1603, the Edo period in Japan. For generations, the stage acting forms and skills were kept and handed down from one generation to another, and from father to son. Sons born into a Kabuki actor's family are expected to continue this national tradition; thus, the responsibility is enormous. Each Kabuki actor's family has a different, special role to perform in a Kabuki theater. This goes the same for musicians and artists, etc. Dances and songs are all kept from 17th century Japan, and actors learn the historical aspect of the dances and songs, etc. When a boy becomes three years old, he begins performing on the stage with his father, brothers, and uncles. The training is long and hard but Itsuki says that he enjoys and loves it tremendously.
During the week, Itsuki attends a regular high school, one of the top schools in Tokyo, and he wants to do well academically, too. So, his major concern as a teenager is how to manage his time efficiently and effectively.
Itsuki's relatives who are all Kabuki actors did well academically, too. So, he does not want to be the black sheep of the family. However, Itsuki admits that the Kabuki lessons he receives are getting more challenging than ever as he is maturing. And, his career is expanding beyond just being a Kabuki actor, gaining other acting experiences. For instance, at age 16, Itsuki was offered a role in an anime film as a voice actor and also as a fashion model. Soon, a beautiful child, Itsuki, will most likely be offered a role in a film as well. Whatever he does, best of luck!
