Back in January, Jeep debuted
Back in January, Jeep debuted the three-row, long-wheelbase Grand Cherokee L as the first half of the new Grand Cherokee lineup. Nine months later, the company has finally shared what its two-row counterpart will look like.
The look of the two-row car will be immediately familiar to those who have seen the L on the road already. A slimmer grille and headlight structure modernizes the car's look while preserving its traditional shape. A lower roof, contrasted in glossy black on some models, gives the Grand Cherokee a contrasting look. At the back, wide wraparound taillights further emphasize a high beltline.
The biggest change from the Grand Cherokee L is the 4xe trim, a plug-in hybrid offering that shares branding with Jeep's current hybrid Wrangler. That name is still somehow meant to be pronounced "four-by-e," so it is fitting that the 375 horsepower 4xe can also come with the Trailhawk off-road option. The hybrid is only good for 25 miles of all-electric range, but Jeep says that a 4xe Trailhawk has already completed the Rubicon Trail under only electric power.
The interior comes with the sort of high-tech upgrades expected from a premium-facing car debuting in the 2020s, too. A central 10.1-inch display highlights every Grand Cherokee, but an optional 10.2-inch display can be added to the passenger-side dashboard and another 10.1-inch screen is available for the back seats, too. Higher-end Grand Cherokees even offer front seat massagers, too.
The Grand Cherokee is nearly a foot shorter than its Grand Cherokee L counterpart that rides on the same new architecture, thanks in no small part to a wheelbase that is five inches shorter. Jeep says the shorter Grand Cherokee will arrive in North America in early 2022, then the rest of the world later in the year.
