North Korean Defector Speaks About His Dramatic JSA Escape

Alliance for Korea United USA and Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) at UCLA co-organized a virtual speaker event, 'Life Beyond Borders,' featuring guest speaker Oh Chong Song, one of the only North Korean defectors who escaped via the Joint Security Area (JSA).

Oh defected back in November 2017. During his speech, Oh shares the story of driving a car towards the Military Demarcation Line and sprinting across the border toward South Korea. Despite being shot 5 times by North Korean soldiers, he shares how the sight of freedom was what allowed him to persevere and keep moving. Oh also explains that North Korean society is slowly changing, as Pyongyang is becoming a developed city and Korean dramas, movies and K-pop is becoming more accessible to the average North Korean. Oh conveys his ultimate desire for Korean reunification, as his hometown and family are only 30 min away from where he lives in Seoul.
