The art of making baskets and hats in the Haida and Tlingit traditions is painstaking.  In the past, basketmaking was utilitarian, having to create hats to protect from the rain and elements in the very wet Pacific Northwest.  Gianna Willard and her mother Diane Douglas-Willard are two top Northwest Coast indigenous basket makers.  Diane is a veteran basket maker.  Gianna has only been making baskets for one year but has been exposed to the process all of her life through her mother.  Paul Niemi of Uncle Paulie's World arts and culture blog at http://unclepauliesworld.blogspot.com had the opportunity to interview this mother-daughter basket making team at the 53rd Annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Art and Fair as part of his "Heard @ the Heard 2011" series.
