Demonstration of a Ball Screw used for Universal Testing Machines

This video demonstrates the operating principle for a ball screw. A ball screw is one of the key components to a Universal Testing Machine (UTM). The ball screw is placed on a large straight screw. A motor is used to turn the screw which makes the ball screw move up and down, along the screw's length. A cross-head beam can be fixed to the ball screw to drive a larger assembly. Most H-frame tensile testers use two ball screws to mount the crosshead. These machines are position controlled usually with an encoder, LVDT, or some similar type of linear motion sensor.
