While "Jerry-Rigging" and "MacGyvering" the wiring to the compressor, we discovered that at least one of the wires is frayed and brittle inside the insulation jacket. So even though we successfully connected all of the wires securely onto the compressor prongs using heat-shrink tubing, we decided to replace all of the wires in order to prevent future problems. This is Part 7 in "Our Journey" to solve an issue with our home Central AC which is not cooling but the fan outside in the condenser unit is working / running normally.  We will give you a background and more information below but first, here are the #ᴬᴰlinks to some of the components, parts and tools required for this repair:

We found a Rheem Copeland Molded Plug Wiring Harness from the Supply House in New York on Ebay and we were wondering if we could somehow attach the plug to the prongs of the compressor, perhaps by filing off the spades from the rounded connectors. Obviously it didn't work and we'll have to go with KwikLug.

Background:
On one hot summer afternoon, my mom noticed that our air coming from our vent inside the house was warm instead of cold. We can hear and see the fan on the outside unit running. Similarly the indoor unit appear to be working  functioning normally but it's not cooling.

When my dad check the condenser unit outside, he said he couldn't hear the compressor humming. Therefore we think there is something wrong with either the compressor, the capacitor or the wiring itself.

My dad is not an expert in HVAC but he has worked on and has helped a couple of his friends saved several thousand dollars in AC repairs. This is an opportunity for me to learn about heating, venting, air conditioning and refrigeration field work, which I'm sure will be helpful in the future especially right now I'm studying Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Harvard University.  We hope this tutorial video can be your HVAC DIY guide as well.

We're seriously hoping there is nothing wrong with the compressor because it would be extremely expensive to replace the compressor because of the labor involved in welding, brazing, soldering the AC lines and purging the contaminants using nitrogen.

Eventually we found what's wrong with it and as stated above it was either a bad capacitor causing the wires to burn, or the wires melted due to old age and cause the capacitor to fail.

So What Causes a Burnt Wire in Your HVAC System?
Burnt wires are actually a pretty common repair in the HVAC industry.
There are several causes (including but not limited to:
1. Loose connections / corroded terminals
2. Failing capacitor
3. Faulty breakers

The basics of cooling your home is about removing heat from the refrigerant. This is done by turning the refrigerant by compressing and decompressing the refrigerant to transform it from a liquid to a gas and back to a liquid. As the refrigerant is compressed, it becomes hot. When it is decompressed, it becomes cold.

There are 2 units used in the typical residential AC system
Outdoor Unit: Compressor, the condensing coils, and a large fan.

Indoor Unit: Key components located in the indoor AC unit are the evaporative expansion valve, the evaporator coils, and the blower fan.
