When is an SUV not an SUV? And when is a station wagon not a station wagon? Both good questions, and both have the same answer.

If you’re looking for something with more interior space than even a large SUV, and if you’re looking for something that can do a little bit more than dropping off the kids, let me introduce you to the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack, shown here in limited edition Wolfsburg trim.

The idea of a high-riding station wagon is nothing new – Subaru’s Outback has been across it for years. Volkswagen, though, only introduced the Alltrack locally in 2016, and it’s the only all wheel drive Passat in the range.

It comes with just one engine choice  – a two-litre turbo diesel that makes 140kW and a healthy 400Nm of torque. It’s backed by a 6 speed dual clutch clutch gearbox.

It sits about 30mm higher than a regular Passat wagon, and there’s a bit of upper and under bdy protection if you do want to head down a dirt road.

And this particular one is known as the Wolfsburg edition. It’s $4200 dearer than the regular Alltrack, but it gets adaptive suspension, better LED lights, and this, VW’s awesome Active Info Display dash.

The Active Info Display replaces the usual instruments with a 12.3-inch colour screen that can be set to display a whole bunch of different information.

Want to see a map of where you’re going? No problem. Large digital speedo? No problem.

It’s easy to read, easy to use, and it really adds a touch of high end tech to the Passat.

The other thing that the Passat Alltrack wagon has is this – acres and acres of space in here and in here, too. Sitting behind my driving position, I’ve still got plenty of room. It’s nice that I have climate controls back here, but I am missing somewhere to charge my phone.

Even with the rear seats up, the Alltrack has more room inside than VW’s large Touareg SUV. And with the seats down it’s got more room than a Hyundai Santa Fe – though it falls a few litres short of its nearest competitor, the Subaru Outback.

Out here, the Passat Alltrack drives much more like a wagon than an SUV, though the 19 inch rims that come with the Wolfsburg pack mean that it’s not going to be quite as useful if you do want to head down a rough forestry track.

It’ll do it, but you’re exposing both the rims and the tyres to potential damage.

As a highway tourer, the Alltrack is excellent, with a quiet, punchy diesel, a comfortable ride and lots of driver aids like lane departure assistance and AEB.

The Passat Alltrack is a niche car, and the Wolfsburg version really makes it a niche within a niche – a high riding wagon that kinda wants to be a sports tourer.

Given how practical Is, though, and how nicely it drives, perhaps that’s not such a bad notion.
