Sidney Poitier, starred in "To
Sidney Poitier, starred in "To Sir, with Love",
"The Defiant Ones" with Tony Curtis,
acted with Clark Gable in "Band of Angels",
shone in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" with the duo Spencer Tracy
and Katharine Hepburn, and rocked it as Virgil Tibbs in "In the Heat of the Night."
He debuted with "No Way Out" with Richard Widmark
and made other great films like "A Raisin in the Sun"
"Blackboard Jungle" (Glenn Ford),
"Something of Value" (Rock Hudson)
"The Long Ships", "Paris Blues" (Paul Newman)
and “Lilies of the Field”, for which he won his Oscar in 1964.
Her Oscar came 25 years after Pioneer Hattie McDaniel won
the award for best supporting actress for "Gone with the Wind" in 1939.
For 1980s audiences, he is best remembered
for films like "Shoot to Kill" (Tom Berenger)
"Little Nikita" (River Phoenix),
"Sneakers" (River Phoenix and Robert Redford),
"The Jackal"
where he acted alongside Bruce Willis and Richard Gere,

He made his directorial debut with the Western
“Buck and the Preacher” in 1972
alongside Harry Belafonte and Ruby Dee.
Poitier directed Belafonte again in
"Uptown Saturday Night", 1974
where he teamed up with comedian Bill Cosby.
In 1997, in one of his last films, he played
brilliantly Nelson Mandela.
In 2002 Denzel Washington presented Poitier with the honorary Oscar
in recognition of his brilliant career.
In 2009, President Barak Obama granted Poitier
the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The old Master, who seemed eternal, left us
on 1/6/22 but fans will always remember him fondly.
He was born premature, poor, suffered prejudice,
but with Perseverance, Courage and Integrity,
he "Walked Among Kings".
Now he is timeless, belongs to all times.
