If you've got two-factor authentication enabled on your Apple iPhone or iPad and you want to take your Apple ID security to the next level, you can create a recovery key. This recovery key can be used to get you back into your Apple ID immediately in the event you get locked out of your account. It's important to note that when you create a recovery key, the ability to recover access to your Apple ID through Apple's account recovery service is turned off and if you don't have either your trusted devices or your recovery key, you may not be able to access your Apple ID again.
Now let's walk through the steps to create an Apple ID recovery key for your iPhone or iPad.
Step 1. Tap to launch the "Settings" app on your iPhone or iPad, and then tap your name and Apple ID profile picture at the top of the menu. The Apple ID screen is shown.
Step 2. Tap "Password and Security" in the menu. The Password and Security screen is displayed.
Step 3. Tap "Recovery Key" in this menu. The Recovery Key screen is shown.
Step 4. Tap the toggle next to Recovery Key to turn it on. A dialog box is displayed asking if you're sure you want to create a recovery key and warning you that if you lose your Apple ID recovery key that Apple won't be able to help you regain access to your account or your data.
Step 5. Tap "Use Recovery Key." A prompt to enter your iPhone or iPad passcode is displayed.
Step 6. Enter your iPhone or iPad passcode and then tap "Done." Your 28-charachter Apple ID recovery key is displayed. Take great care to write this code down and keep it in a safe place where you'll be able to find it if you need it. Again, if you lose this code and you don't have access to your trusted devices, you may not be able to access the account associated with your Apple ID again.
