The state of Alabama is seeking to become the first state to execute an inmate using nitrogen gas, a method that 58-year-old Kenneth Smith’s attorneys argue amounts torture. Smith will be forced to inhale pure nitrogen through a mask until he suffocates. Some critics say the untested method is cruel and inhumane. Michael Copeland, an attorney and criminal justice professor who was part of a team study to see how the nitrogen method would work, joins “CUOMO” to discuss.
