“Unity is not uniformity, it is solidarity with diversity” – Uthman Badar Our very own Dr. Uthman Badar, Research Operations Manager and Lead Editor at the Ummatics Institute, presents his talk: “Is Muslim Unity a Priority?” addressing key contentions against the priority of working for Muslim unity. Dr. Badar begins his talk by categorizing unity into three types: theological, social, and political. He then addresses various levels of contention surrounding these forms of unity, systematically dismantling them with arguments rooted in the Qur'an, Sunnah, and the scholarly tradition. Ultimately, he makes the case for Muslim unity as both logical and necessary. Dr. Badar is a student of Arabic, Islamic sciences, and continental philosophy. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Western Sydney University in 2023, where he currently teaches as sessional staff. His research interests include secularism and religion, liberalism, political theory, and political theology. His doctoral dissertation is centered on a critique of the conception of secularity and the legitimation of secularism in liberal political thought. He is also an active member of the Muslim community in Sydney, Australia with over two decades of engagement in grassroots activism, da’wah, and apologetics. This talk is part of Ummatics Institute’s 2nd annual conference - titled "Towards an Ummatic Future" – which took place at ISTAC (International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This conference seeks to explore the “what”, “why”, and “how” of the Ummatics Institute in the context of imagining an ummatic future, understanding the importance of working for it, and thinking about how such work might proceed. The conference covered reflections by prominent thinkers on Islam as an ummatic deen, comparative unification models, mid-level discursive change, ummatic political analysis and more. “Ummatics” is an emerging concept in Muslim sociopolitical discourse that seeks to strengthen age-old Islamic ideas and practices.
