So many people have made videos that show incorrect or incomplete info on this very important topic. If you are competent enough to rebuild an engine, you don't have to come to You Tube to find out how to hone the cylinders correctly. 90% of the videos are not using or recommending a fine enough grit of hone. If you feel the cylinders of a new block from GM or Honda or Dart you would not be able to feel the cross hatch, it is that smooth. Modern engines are machined from the factory using torque plates and million dollar hones.I have bought several used NASCAR blocks that are  so smooth the cylinders shine!!! Modern low tension rings are pre-lapped from the factory. If you are coming to this sight for info, then the most important thing I can tell you is to not waste your money on a cheap hone that will impart too rough of a surface. Get a 320 grit ball hone, use ATF on it and only hone the cylinder for 10-15 seconds creating a 30 to 45 degree cross hatch. Then clean the cylinders using strong detergent and hot water if possible, then wipe them out with a paper towel a few times using ATF on it. When it comes out completely clean, you are finished. The reason to use a machine shop is so you can have them inspect your pistons and advise you of a potential problem. This is that important that experts that do this every day can help you get it right. Many shops won't charge you for miking the pistons and they would mike the cylinder when honing it.The pistons and rings control huge cylinder temperatures (up to 1500 deg.) and pressure and I can not overstate how important there function is.
