What is a chaplain?
A chaplain is a representative of a religious tradition who works in the pastoral care departments of organizations such as a prisons, hospitals, universities, military units, private chapels, and government. The chaplains’ main purpose is to serve as a source of emotional and spiritual guidance for families, patients, and residents of those organizations. Chaplains may be men or women of any denomination.
The chaplains’ duties include:
1. Spiritual Guidance to individuals and groups who may be going through a tough time by providing spiritual counseling based on their particular religious doctrine.
2. Prayer. Chaplains must have knowledge of prayer relevant to their clients or patients’ needs and the denomination of the chaplain.
3. Rituals and Legal. Chaplains execute the practice of ceremonies or rituals specific to their religious denominations.
4. Community Service. Chaplains’ put forth effort into building relationships with volunteers and administrators in their community for consultation and education.
