This video shows a way to do 'foamed channels' by using 'on top sewing stitches'. To get 'good pleats' also depend on a 'good foam'...I mean, density of the foam is important to not let it flatten in a short time. The 'fabric backing' helps a lot to hold and keep in place our 'foamed channels'...if you use a 'a thin and cheap fabric like', runs the risk of breaking or rotten in short time due to humidity.
There are many upholstery patterns which need to be kept in place to give the desired shape...that is why upholsterers use 'listings' (steel wires inside little fabric bags held together with hog-rings). But, 'velcro' has come to replace them as another option and has the same outcome.
