Mandarin Chinese 4 Tones Explained in English--literally.  The most sensible and easy way for Americans to learn the 4 tones of Chinese.

Are you trying to learn Mandarin Chinese? Do you feel the 4 tones of pronunciation are, well...really foreign? Here we try to connect the 4 tones of Chinese to something very familiar to Americans. Quite simply, we apply the 4 tones of Mandarin Chinese to the word "what". Saying "what" using different tones of voice can have very different meanings for the exact same word. The same is of course true in Chinese as well so we try to point out some examples using Chinese words as well.
This is meant to be a fun, but meaningful introduction to the 4 tones of Chinese for new or struggling Mandarin language learners.
DailyNoodles, Inc. is dedicated to helping American kids have fun while learning Mandarin Chinese. Part of kids' success learning Chinese is that their parents, even non-speakers, can support kids in the process and learn as much alongside them as possible. Young kids will have an innate ability to pick up the Chinese tones as long as they have enough consistent exposure to the language. Older children and adult learners may need to learn the Chinese tones in a more deliberate manner as we showcase here.

Our focus is on kids learning Mandarin Chinese and their parents.  We hope that our focus on creating fun programs in Chinese for kids is useful for kids whose parents may not know any Chinese at all!
