What is a Shower Diverter?

I was in the shower recently when I thought "How does that shower thing work?". obviously its a valve of some sort but  it seemed so lightweight and I knew it couldn't have electronics, but I had trouble finding anything helpful online even shower diverter repair videos were useless.

So I decided to try and make my own shower diverter valve demonstration piece out of pvc and a water hose. Shower diverters are obviously more sophisticated and complex but I wasn't looking to be a certified plumber. I just wanted to know what that thing to turn the shower on actually did.
