My wife and I were blessed with the opportunity to visit Hawaii this past summer. We visited the Iao Valley State Monument on the island of Maui. It is located in Central Maui just west of the town of Wailuku. The main attraction is the iconic Iao Needle (elevation 2250') nestled in the middle of the Iao Valley. Iao means "cloud supreme" which is clearly seen in the bank of clouds that often sit over the valley. The source of water for the streams flowing through the valley are these clouds that bring frequent rain. It is very rare to find this valley bathed in sunshine. Our hike was in the clouds.
