On Friday, January 26, 2018, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum commemorated International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The United Nations designated International Holocaust Remembrance Day on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau to honor victims of Nazism and promote education to help prevent future genocide.

On this annual day of commemoration, the UN urges every member state to honor the 6 Million Jews and millions of other victims of the Holocaust and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides.

During this one-hour ceremony, Holocaust survivor Halina Peabody shared her memories of living in Poland under false papers identifying her as Catholic. The program will also featured remarks from Howard M. Lorber, Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and David O’Sullivan, Ambassador of the European Union to the United States.

Musical selections included Ani Ma’amin” (“I Believe”) performed by Jacqueline Mendels Birn, Holocaust survivor and Museum volunteer, and Folks-motif fun yor 1940  (“Folk Theme of the Year 1940”), which was composed in the Warsaw ghetto.
