Sideroblastic Anemia : Causes, Pathogenesis, Clinical Presentation, Diagnosis, Treatment
Sideroblastic anemia is caused by defects in the synthesis of protoporphyrin, a critical part of the heme molecule.
With less protoporphyrin to bind to, iron may build up in the bone marrow and in other organs.
Sideroblastic anemia can be divided into congenital (X-linked deficiency in ALA synthase) and acquired etiologies (drugs, toxins, and nutritional deficiencies).
The hallmark of the disease is ringed sideroblasts present on a bone marrow aspirate after staining with Prussian blue.
The treatment for sideroblastic anemia varies based on the different causes. Vitamin B6 may be helpful in many cases, both congenital and acquired.
