The 4DX Method - The Best Way to "Move the Needle"

he 4DX method or the 4 rules of execution is my favorite strategy to "move the needle" because it focuses on what actually moves you forward. The 4DX method is split up into 4 steps, Wildly important goals The Lead measure Scoreboard And Accountability Let's start with your wildly important goal or WIG for short. You can have a lot of goals but you only want to pick your top 3, 1 for your personal, 1 for your professional, and 1 for your recreational life. We don't have an infinite amount of time so we need to be selective on where we funnel our attention. After you have discovered your WIGs you want to focus on what actually accomplishes your goal. This is the lead measure – it is the action that brings about the outcome you desire. For example: if your goal is to get in shape then your WIG is to workout 5 days a week. Your lead measure wouldn't be working out because working out doesn't get you in shape, sweating during your workout does. So then your lead measure would a workout that gets you to sweat because that sweat will get you in shape. The same thing with writing if your goal is to write a book, most people will use time as the aspect to measure – if I write for 2 hours a day my book will get done. But you can "write" for hours and not generate anything productive. Instead, your lead measure should be 5 final pages a day. This will move your goal forward and it's easy to measure. The next step is to keep a scoreboard. You want a visual representation of how often you are acting on your lead measure. This will help you maintain consistency. Life gets busy so it's easy to forget about working on your lead measure. Having that visual representation – the scoreboard – gives you something to work on. Try to get better each week and increase the amount of time you are focusing on that lead measure. The final step is creating accountability so that you maintain these goals long term. Find someone online who has the same goal or even a local friend and keep each other accountable. Have 1 weekly meeting where you commit a certain amount of action towards your WIGs and where you reflect on your last week's commitment. For example, I would have a meeting with my 4DX partner where we would review how many WIG workouts I had last week, if I didn't meet my goal we would figure out why and solve the problem. Then we would commit to a certain amount of workouts for the coming week. Also – your 4DX partner doesn't have to have the same goal as you, you can still hold each other accountable even if you have different goals...... This is 4DX – these are the 4 rules of execution.
