The Buckinghams (one of my all-time favorite bands) stormed on to the music scene in 1967. They sold more records in America than any other band except for the Monkees, had 5 top 20 hits and were labeled “the most-listened-to band of the year” by Billboard magazine. “Kind of a Drag”, their biggest hit, sits at #3 today and will go to #1 next week, ending a 7 week run by the Monkees’ “I’m A Believer”.

Those certainly not having “a drag” dancing in-studio today:
Penny Penwarden (0:41), Marcel Poitier (0:46), John Pollard (0:52), Leslye Vodden (1:05), Wes Menasco (1:17), Gary Hendrickson (1:47), Karen Sudlow & Bernie Kates (1:51) Theodosia Dayton (1:58), Stan Soburn (2:01), Olivia “Liver” Favela (2:18), Rick Moreno (2:27) and on the riser today it’s Don Sanuskar (rockin’ the suede “desert boots”) & Roni Menacker (1:37).

This week in music news:
Yesterday (Feb. 10) The Beatles recorded “A Day in the Life” at Abbey Road with The Monkees’ Michael Nesmith in attendance.
In 3 days (Feb. 14) The Beatles will release “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” and Aretha Franklin will record “Respect” at Atlantic Studios in New York

Coming Up Next:
We jump up to 1969 as the kids dance to a unique top 10 hit song inspired by Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode to Billie Joe” and the performer’s childhood growing up in the swamplands of Louisiana.
