The Canadian government is reintroducing the requirement for a pre-arrival negative PCR COVID-19 test for all travellers leaving Canada regardless of trip duration.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos made the announcement on Friday as Canada continues to see a rise of Omicron COVID-19 infections.

Duclos said the government is reinstating the requirement for a pre-arrival negative PCR test result for all travellers leaving the country for less than 72 hours, and as of Dec. 21, the requirement for pre-arrival testing will be in place again for trips of all durations.

In addition to the PCR reinstatement, Duclos announced Canada is dropping the travel bans imposed on 10 African nations, which were introduced last month to help limit the spread of the variant.

Officials updated Canada’s travel advisories on Wednesday, urging Canadians against any non-essential international travel over the holidays.

The World Health Organization warned this week the Omicron variant is spreading at a rate not seen before.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it “scary,” noting officials are “very concerned” about the effects of a potential surge in cases, even among the vaccinated.
