→ This is what it's like to live in an emptied country and in a "war" economy. Subsistence is hard in a country that is being emptied at a very fast rate due to high prices and constant failed policies.
You could say that Cuba is the country of the exiles, earning a living on the streets of Santa Marta is complex, even being so close to Varadero. A job that brings in a lot of money has become dangerous, that of taxi drivers who suffer assaults on the road and from clients. The exodus intensifies and many women and men have to resort to certain methods and manipulation to be able to escape from Cuba.
There are things that don't come out in documentaries or promotional videos about Cuba, a real life that every Cuban has had to live and only we know it. Shortages corrode our society at unsuspected levels, leading to corruption, crime, envy and other evils that have affected us for some time now. We want our children to be better than us and many times families end up broken as a result of emigration to the USA and other countries, risking their lives in search of a better future. The rationalization of the economy has made life more difficult in Cuba, making it almost impossible to get food in markets and stores, while Havana is affected by the drastic decline in tourism, with the situation being even worse in the other provinces of the country. The class difference is accentuated and those who do not receive remittances face even more difficulties to survive.
